Nadia Comaneci was born on the 12th of November, 1961 within Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej (now Onesti), Romania. Nadia is the Romanian Olympic gymnast. She holds the record for being recognized with 10/10 scores in an Olympic event. Bela Karrolyi was a Romanian gymnastics instructor who was later Comaneci's coach and first became aware of Comaneci when she was just six years old. In 1969, she participated in the Romanian Junior Championships where she placed 13th. She was awarded the championship in 1970. In her very first international competition in 1972, she won the event having won three golds. In her very first competition at the senior level, Lyudmila Turkishcheva from Russia took home five gold medals as well as one silver. She became the first female to do a reverse double salo on the uneven parallel bar when she won the American Cup, New York City 1976. When she was a child she was an ice skater with Nina Wayne in the travelling entertainment program Ice Capades. They featured staged ice skating performance.
